I don't like blogs

Blogging was the hyped out, cool thing to do on the internet before social networks, like Friendster, My Space & Facebook came out and gave us a low commitment free spot on the web. I think it is passe in a way in 2010 and actually not a good idea for most people. Blogs are just so 2005!

According to Wikipedia, "A blog (or "web log") is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic.

Exciting huh? Don't get me wrong, there are some very cool blogs among over 100,000,000 blogs that provide great news that you can't find on the AP or in mainstream press but the web is also littered with the corpses of so many poorly conceived & well intended blogs.

So many young people (under 25s) and innovative entrepreneurs went out and created their own blogs simply because it is so easy to set up. Register for WordPress or Blogger or whatever free blogging site exists, pick a color & design, throw up a few photos, a bio, and your first entry & the software does the rest. Easy Right?

Yes, very easy to get into but there is always a catch or two. With much enthusiasm, our young (or old these days) blogger emails her friends, does a few weeks of entries and then discovers this is not so much fun anymore. Maybe our blogger decided to write about his fav rock band but then gets bored with researching the latest gossip. Or how about a young girl blogs her thoughts and poems and decides she wants to start another hobby. Or the nice old man across the street decides to blog about historical boats & quits because he has no visitors.

I sound cynical but what I am getting at is that Blogging is hard work because you have to keep at it with daily or even weekly entries to keep your visitors from leaving you. That is the nature of the beast - easy to start, difficult to keep up. A blog reveals all - I can tell when people abandoned their blog for weeks or months because the dates are above each entry. Some blogs I saw were pretty good but there were no comments & the dates lasted five months.

Article submission or personal pages like My Space or Facebook are better for most people because there is no daily commitment. In fact, with declining attention spans, writing paragraphs may become old hat, short video logs & tweets are the new communication of the next gen. (Not you - you stuck around long enough to finish this!)

Any bloggers out there, before you trash my article, hear me out. I too have a blog page on my website e-readerfeeder.com & because it is just one section, I leave it for days without entries. In fact, don't tell anyone, I once cheated by doing two entries at a time and backdated an entry. I know, I should be kicked out of bloggerville for that. But that proves my point in a way, I work on the website almost every day (60 pages up in two months) and it is a topic I like alot but I just don't have the energy to choose a topic & blog about it on a daily basis.

That is way I went the website way, I can work on it without structure & without dates. If I don't want to work on the eReader review section, I can work on the computer table section, if I want to quit my free ebook section, I can work on my eReader covers & skins section. Or I could skip working on it altogether and take a break. By the way it's http://e-readerfeeder.com if you want a look.

Recently I stopped writing articles for it and instead posted a huge number of photos and links because I did not feel like writing. Most blogs demand a minimum of text & familiarity EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Thanks for reading this. I know that websites have their disadvantages too but that is not what this article is about is it?
