There are many reasons to start and maintain a blog, or weblog. It can be made of posts of mostly text, include pictures and music, or be completely comprised of videos. Blogs can be a combination of all of those things in one! But why do people blog? Why are there blogs? Here's a look at the blogging industry and the top reasons they remain popular. *Self Expression. Although this could be combined with the online journal category, blogs for self expression vary greatly. Where an online journal typically is for personal daily activities, self expression blogs can be anything from a collection of poems or artwork, or abstract pieces of thought and expression. These kind of blogs can be anonymous, which is a great way to say things you can't tell anyone. Self expression blog could have a theme or vary in emotion and mood from one day to the next. This is one of the reason blogs are so popular among introverts and writers. *Business/Educational. Blogs for this purpose are usually full of informational and educational pieces about a company or club. Whether it follows a hobby, interest, organization, or cause, this is less personal, and might even be kept up by several people. Blogs like these normally have links to company sites and resources, basic info about their purpose or cause, and updates about recent developments, etc. *A Source of Income. Due the increase in the popularity of blogs and blogging, some bloggers can actually do so for a living. The audience that they have gathered from years of blogging and quality of stories are a sought after group of people to advertisers and businesses. Sometimes, bloggers are paid to post links or stories about companies to give them recognition and "air time" with Internet blog readers. Also, writers can be paid to write for well known blog sites, so sometimes it's not the author, but the website that has gained credibility. Getting to this point usually takes a lot of hard work and experience, or being at the right place at the right time. Professional Advice. This is very similar to people who blog for a living, but it is somewhat different. Some blogs are written by professionals who have a lot of experience in a certain field that garners a lot of publish interest, like sports or fashion. They could also be people who have built a name for themselves in their particular profession, like computer science or physical therapy. These people have become "famous" in their particular field. Their blog is just a way for their large number of fans, followers, and "rookies" to gain from their insight. Sometimes they write about their work, their personal lives, or share links and tools that are very helpful those who are interested in that area. There are all kinds of blogs, and all kinds of interests and reasons for starting a blog. If you enjoy writing and expressing yourself (or posting videos and pictures of yourself!) start a blog!
