Welcome to 2010!

Happy New Year Welcome to 2010

Like a lot of people thinking about the decade that has just past I too would also like to forget that it ever happened. It started with Y2K and ended with yesterday. I won't go over or dwell on the entire list of events that happend locally as well as
globally. Why bother? If you're old enough to read this commentary than you already know what the last ten years have been like. I have, for better or worse, been around
for five such decades starting in 1960. I can honestly say that without a doubt the last ten years have been the worst of them all, for all of us. Remember those people you knew in the early 70's who ate granola, rode bikes and couldn't understand why anyone would want to bring a child into a world like this? They are laughing almost as much as they are crying these days.

I often shake my head in amazement whenever I talk to someone who is fervently wrapped up in the latest US government conspiracy, or someone who isn't looking forward to anything past 2012 "just in case". Yes, I am amazed at what people will turn to in order to seek some sort of truth and therefore stability in their lives. But I am no longer surprised. Hardly. You only have to do a 360 standing just about anywhere in the world these days to get the feeling that things are "comming apart".I won't go into the 'End of Times' discussion here either. I do not want to encourage anyone. I do hope however, that the majority of people will start to see these manifestations in people and cultures as a symptom of everything that we have been doing wrong.

I do not pretend to have any of the answers but here is an observation.

WE WATCH. We are for the most part, in the developed world, a world of watchers. We're all so entirely wired to our information that we have become information repositories. Our new found existence only allows evrything to 'stream' in. Nothing comes out. Information is found, distributed and disseminated and finally packaged, produced and then served up for our daily consumption. Cell phones, pagers, black and blueberries, blue tooth headsets, 24 hour news stations, news and info readily srteamed through any number of devices on your person right now. We are a continent of watchers. The entire world and all of it's issues and problems have somehow been added to and mixed in with what we all used to call 'Entertainment'. The issues and challenges facing all of us on a daily basis became the ultimate reality show.

And We Watch. In between commercials we buy heavy duty items like cars and houses and boats and anythng else we can to help us feel better about our 'earthly' accomplishments. How much stuff we have in each of our dwellings is more important than what we have actually DONE with our lives. The world and all it's problems is the ultimate season of "Lost". We all rush off to work ( work is the function we perform that allowes us NOT to take part in what's happening out there as we are 'more concerned with our next pay cheque than those poor people in the Sudan'.)

That all being said and recognizable, let's get back to work.

As this is a time for reflection and a time for looking forward as well I can only hope that collectively we'll all start to see that in order for things to improve for everybody, well then, everybody is going to have to chip in and truly sacrafice a
liitle for the greater good of all. In what form will this so called sacrafice take? Funny thing here.....I know inherently what it would take to start to address some of the most basic issues facing us all, but like you I too am wrapped up in this the
greatest reality show. Here is how it sounds simply put. If some of the people on the planet have absolutely nothing, and still some other people have everything, then we must give half of everything we have to those who have nothing until we all have something.

Simplicity is the nail that killed progress. It is simple answers like these that inherently end up being the most complicated to put into action. The whole nature of our society is based on the individual pursuing riches and status for himself first
rather than the good of anybody else. Our society is about competition. A contest to see who can leave more stuff behind for their cat. We live in a world where this happens all the time. Somewhere on this continent right now there is a very well fed cat that someone is PAID to look after and coddle until it too passes. Even in death we are allowed to deny others the benefits of what we accomplished in our own lives.

In reading this commentary I get the feeling that it won't be that original. That you will hear this refrain of mine from time to time from other writers and commentaries. That not only would we rather forget the last decade but we would like
to put off the next one for awhile if we could do that too. It is only January the first, 2010 and already I know that for at least the forseable future the last decade will bleed nto the next offering no respite from the daily barrage of bad news from all corners of the world. I offer up no answers for you. I have no solutions to the issues we all face. I brook no assumptions that things are just about to get better.

In my experience things always tend to get much worse. It's when things ease up a bit that we fool ourselves into thinking things are actually 'much better'. They aren't though. The ability to come to terms with the issues that face us, the will to
overcome adversity and to persevere as a species may well come to the test soon. Or it may not. In my fifty years here on Earth so far I have noticed that things seem to settle down a bit as soon as the fear gets to the point where people stop buying things. Feel good about the world, feel good about yourself, feel good about getting yourself that Jeep Grand Cheroke!

So, the year 2010 has arrived. I would like to think that when this one ends some calmer heads will prevail the world over. That maybe we will hate just a little less than last year. That we will understand a little bit more. A year that allows us to
see our differences as our things in common. My resolution this year is to stop little tiny indignities where I see them. I will pro-actively take time improve my own attitude and actions and try to realize and remember that almost all problems can be traced back to a single individual. Open a door for someone or hold it open. Thank the bus driver before you get off the bus. Don't ask yourself, 'should I help that person". The question is also the answer in this case. Help someone. Do something that doesn't benefit you in any way shape or form. Try not to feel to good about yourself when you DO do something right. You were supposed to do it in the first place. Don't expect to be rewarded for anything good that you do for others. Just go and do it. Being kind or good was never suposed to be an "option" for you to opt out of whenever the need suits or arises. Let's work on the one problem that always seems to be at the core of every other problem on the planet. Let's collectivelly work on ourselves.

Happy New Year and a wish for Peace to all the world over.
